How to lead yourself to be the best leader you can be
“The idea that I have a choice about what kind of leader I want to be has transformed my life. I realise that I have been expecting the organisation to define what leadership is and to teach me how to do it. I had no idea that I could grow it myself. That’s exciting.”
Jan is smiling broadly, eyes shining and buzzing with positive energy. Jan is a so-called “Middle Manager” in a large company and had just completed the first day of her leadership development programme. Like most delegates, Jan comes to leadership development with the expectation of being developed into a leader by her organisation. What she has discovered is that she is already a leader. Jan is here to discover her own leadership roots, access her own potential and take responsibility for becoming the leader she aspires to be.
People like Jan are very lucky to work organisations that invest in giving them the time, space and support to grown their own leadership. However, once you realise that growing your own leadership is a personal choice, you have just as much opportunity as Jan, and sometimes more.
But, how would you go about it without the company programme? You create a “my programme” using these five “modules” (feel free to customise) over whatever timeframe you choose.
